The Runaway Guys
"When making a brand new collaborative Let's Play channel, a lot of things need to be done. First of all, you've got to be sure you pick a first game that's sure to bring out the frustration in everybody! The next thing is to make sure that your recording equipment can take the loudness associated with such frustration! Next, you have to think of a clever name for the whole channel."
Chuggaaconroy in the video "Introducing... TheRunawayGuys!"[src]

The Runaway Guys, often abbreviated as TRG, were a collaborative group of Let's Players on YouTube, who comprised of Proton Jon, NintendoCapriSun, and Chuggaaconroy. Chugga was in charge of maintaining the channel, although Jon made posts and comments for the channel as well. They had special guests for many of their projects, with guest collaborators MasaeAnela and Tom Fawkes being considered the 'co-producers' of the channel.

For the first two years, updates usually only occurred every Saturday, but this was changed to Saturday, Tuesday, and Thursday following an announcement on February 8, 2013. Videos for Mario Party games (starting with the third) and Fortune Street are also posted daily (each board beginning on Saturday and continuing every day until its end). Since the creation of the channel in 2011, 46 main collab LPs have been produced, along with five side collab LPs and six tournament LPs. They have 487 thousand subscribers and 397 total video views as of 2023.

At PAX East 2012, the group established a video game trivia and challenge show that would go on to become Thrown Controllers, which has grown into a hugely popular show, appearing in the United States and Canada at several conventions. In May of 2018, The Runaway Guys Colosseum was live streamed as a weekend long event to raise money for Direct Relief. This was followed up in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. All of them once again in benefit of Direct Relief. To date, The Runaway Guys Colosseum has raised over $1,000,000.

As of February 2024, the group's main projects are on indefinite hiatus due to controversies surrounding Chuggaaconroy that made it impossible to move forward with him involved in any capacity; however, Jon has confirmed that Thrown Controllers and Colosseum will continue under different branding. In March 2024, Jon revealed that colosseum has been rebranded as Thrown Controllers Colosseum. In a reply to a tweet mentioning the core group being split, Jon said that Emile is working on himself, and encouraged Jon and Tim to move forward while that happened. Time will tell how everything shakes out, but Jon revealed that he's not as worried as he was at first.[1]

History

Therunawayguys

The Runaway Guys in 2011

The Runaway Guys collaborative Let's Play channel was launched by Proton Jon, NintendoCapriSun, and Chuggaaconroy, and their first Let's Play, Mario Party, premiered on February 5, 2011. The three of them were the only ones participating, but many of their later videos featured additional players. Chugga was in charge of maintaining the channel, although Jon made posts and comments for the channel as well. They had special guests for many of their projects, including Josh Jepson, MasaeAnela, Tom Fawkes and Stephen Georg. Along with their official long-running LPs, they did one-shot filler LPs (labeled "The Runaway Gaiden"), tournaments featuring multitudes of guest players, and side collab projects that they gradually updated and used as filler between regular projects. Their last Let's Play before the channel went on indefinite hiatus, Kirby Star Allies, premiered on October 31st 2023.

The Runaway Guys at 2018 PAX West

On occasion at various conventions, the Runaway Guys have their own panel, called Thrown Controllers, a live game show which focuses on video game trivia and challenges. The event has been broadcast on numerous gaming conventions such as PAX, Magfest and Momocon. In its debut at PAX East 2012, two teams took turns answering questions and playing video game challenges, either against each other, solo, or against members of the audience. At PAX Prime 2012, they retooled the game into a single-person quiz show with challenges, similar to the initial concept except for one person at a time, and this is how it has been done since. Many prizes are awarded at these panels, ranging from character pins from Fangamer to (as a grand prize) an actual video game console, such as a Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, or Nintendo Switch.

In May of 2018, The Runaway Guys Colosseum was live streamed as a weekend long event to raise money for Direct Relief. This was followed up in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. All of them once again in benefit of Direct Relief. The Runaway Guys Colosseum is a weekend long event that is live streamed every year to raise money for Direct Relief to aid people around the world through crisis and hardships. Combining video games, music, art, and comedy, The Runaway Guys and friends go all out to raise money for charity. Be it comedic stream bumpers, video game modifier donation incentives, catching a rocking concert, or chilling out with some relaxing art time, there is something for everybody to watch and enjoy during the event. With the combined efforts of the community, event staff, and the performers, a total over $1,000,000 has been raised since the inception of the event.

Proton Jon's full statement

Proton Jon's statement on TRG's future following the 2024 Chuggaaconroy Allegations

As of February 2024, the group's main projects are on indefinite hiatus due to controversies surrounding Chuggaaconroy that made it impossible to move forward with him involved in any capacity; however. After a long talk with Emile and Tim, Jon decided to put the TRG channel on indefinite hiatus. Jon also revealed that the projects they had already recorded for TRG that hadn't been posted, will likely not be posted, as he believes it doesn't feel right to just post it as if nothing happened. He said that maybe sometime down the road they'll get posted, but that it will be a ways off. Jon also said that he and Tim will consider starting a new channel, and getting some of their close friends involved so it can embody the core energy of TRG while cutting free of the name, but said that this won't be for a while as said they need a break after the previous few months. Jon revealed that colosseum will still be moving forward, and is still planned for this year, but it will be rebranding slightly and removing the TRG name, as they feel it's bigger than just one person and puts out too much good into the world to lose. In March 2024, Jon revealed that colosseum has been rebranded as Thrown Controllers Colosseum. In a reply to a tweet mentioning the core group being split, Jon said that Emile is working on himself, and encouraged Jon and Tim to move forward while that happened. Time will tell how everything shakes out, but Jon revealed that he's not as worried as he was at first.[2]

Main Members

Chuggaaconroy

EmileTransparent

The first of the main three Runaway Guys, Chuggaaconroy is usually the best or at least better players of whatever game the group is playing. He is the loudest and most energetic of the three main guys. He also tries to annoy Proton Jon as much as possible and allow for situations where the viewers can laugh at the group's collective suffering.

In the Mario Parties (up to Mario Party 4), he played Donkey Kong. In Mario Party 5, he switched to Daisy. In Mario Party 7, he switched again to Toad. In Super Smash Bros, he played Ness. In Mario Kart 64, he played Wario. In the New Super Mario Bros. series, he played Mario, but switched to Yellow Toad in New Super Luigi U. In Kirby's Return to Dreamland, he played Kirby. In Fortune Street, he played Bowser Jr. for the first three boards, then switched back to Donkey Kong starting from Slimenia. In the Tournament Arc of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, he played Lucas. In Mario Power Tennis, he played Bowser Jr. In Mario Kart: Double Dash, he played Toad on Team Streetpassers with Masae Anela. In the Rayman series, he played Rayman. In Castle Crashers, he played Red Knight. In The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, he played Red Link. In Secret of Mana he played the Boy. In 100% Orange Juice!, initially he played as QP, but later switched to Sumika.

NintendoCapriSun

TimTransparent

The second of the main three Runaway Guys, NintendoCapriSun (also just "NCS" or "Tim") is the quietest and nicest of the three. This usually means Chugga and Jon will beat him, though he's not by any means bad at games.

In the Mario Parties, Mario Kart 64 and Fortune Street, he played Yoshi. In the New Super Mario Bros.series, he played Luigi. In Kirby's Return to Dream Land, he played King Dedede. In Super Smash Bros, he initially played Yoshi in his match against Chugga, then switched to Fox for the remainder of the video. In the Tournament Arc of Super Smash Bros Brawl, he played Diddy Kong. In Mario Power Tennis, he played Yoshi. In the Rayman series, he played a Teensie. In Castle Crashers, he played Green Knight. In The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, he played Green Link. In Secret of Mana he played the Sprite. In 100% Orange Juice!, he plays as Suguri.

Proton Jon

JonTransparent

The third of the three main Runaway Guys, Proton Jon is also a great player, but is usually messed up by the game or Chugga. Tends to act like he's surrounded by idiots.

In Mario Party 1, Mario Kart 64, Mario Party 2, and Super Smash Bros. 64, he played Mario. In the New Super Mario Bros series, he played Blue Toad. In Kirby's Return to Dream Land, he primarily played as Meta Knight. In Fortune Street and all Mario Party titles starting from 3, he played Waluigi (or Rosalina in games where she is available). In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, he played Ike. In Mario Power Tennis, he played Luigi. In the Rayman series, he played Globox. In Castle Crashers, he played Blue Knight. In The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, he played Blue Link. In Secret of Mana he played the Girl . In 100% Orange Juice!, he played as Kyousuke before switching to Sora (Military).

Side Content

  1. Billion Road
  2. Wheel of Fortune (The 3rd video filmed was the worst video ever filmed according to Jon, due to the others bringing up a bad event that happened to Jon beforehand during the entire video. Also due to Jon getting flack for insulting Emile in his girl voice)

Main LPs

  1. Super Mario Wonder (Best playthrough according to Jon)
  2. Mario Party 9 (Jon mentioned they had a fun time and one of the members changed a lot during the game)

Trivia

  • Originally, the group was going to be a duo, only Emile and Jon. Tim was originally a guest before becoming the third member permanently.[3]
  • The Runaway Guys sometimes had other Let's Players joined in as a guest, such as MasaeAnela, JoshJepson, Lucahjin, SuperJeenius, etc. Some of the guests have since gone on to be very important:
    • Lucah has since married Jon.
    • MasaeAnela doubles as the guys' tech expert for their game show Thrown Controllers.
  • The channel rebranded in 2013, omitting the several gaming references previously seen in their banner instead focusing on their arrow-based logos, as well as adding animated faces of the core members, made by ACFan120, who has previously The Runaway Guys animations.
    • MasaeAnela has drawn the logo currently being used.
    • Two ACFan120 animations accompanied the #1 moment to two different TRG LPs, with the animation of Emile accidentally choosing to fight Jon at the end of Chapter 7 in Dokapon Kingdom and the 'Six Inches Incident' from the first E. Gadd's Garage match in Mario Party 6. The former was the third of three animations (by different animators) to appear in the Dokapon Kingdom Top 15, with JoliVector's animations being used for #5 (Steve the Magic Poohead) and a Plox animation accompanying #2 (Robbery Sale).
  • In a 2011 interview, Jon admitted that he wasn't too proud of his behavior in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, as he felt like he spent much of the game up to World 8 trying to kill Emile after falling victim to an incident that nearly gave him a black eye before recording started. This resulted in Jon channelling that resentment into the LP by actively targeting Emile at the behest of being a teammate to Tim and Josh, and being very confrontational and irritated overall. When the guys started playing through the sequel a few years later, Jon promised that he would try to avoid this behavior, so long as nobody draws first blood on him. In true TRG fashion, it doesn't last very long, but thankfully it also doesn't completely overtake his play style and only crops up every so often.
  • Emile has admitted multiple times that he wasn't happy with how the Mario Party 3 project turned out. He's admitted the jokes at Jon's expense were mean-spirited and should have relented, especially considering Jon was recovering from a nasty break-up with his ex. Emile later reaffirmed he believes it's the worst playthrough the Guys produced because everyone was in a bad mental spot;[4] aside from the end of Jon's five-year relationship, Tim had also gotten sick and Emile was suffering from food poisoning during the recording trip.[5]
  • As it continued on, Jon has mentioned openly hating the Dokapon Kingdom Let's Play because of people harassing him both in the comments and on social media about his choices, when in fact the episodes were recorded months in advance and he was already long behind his decisions, meaning there was nothing he could do about it. This toxicity eventually lead him to having a massive explosion and going into a scathing rant towards said people after he was pushed a bit too much about it on his personal streams, following the Arc Fatigue nearing episode 100.
  • In 2022, Jon admitted that he was enjoying TRG Colosseum less and less over the years, due to the COVID-19 pandemic severely limiting what the participants could do together, as well as the overall stress of trying to prepare for each event remotely weighing hard on him. It's since gotten to the point where Jon has been considering giving up on the event altogether.
  • On February 1st, Proton Jon issued a statement about the future of TRG's activities. He announced that he would be distancing himself professionally from Emile, who is taking time away from the internet for his own private self-betterment. He also announced that TRG would enter hiatus and a new channel with a different name will eventually launch, with Colosseum and other TRG projects eventually rebranding in kind.
