Episode 8: Nacrene Puff Edit

Clay is mentioned by someone in Nacrene City, who praises him for constructing Driftveil Tunnel.

Episode 24: Bridging the Scrap Edit

Elesa mentioned to Emile/Blair and Cheren that the Driftveil City Gym Leader is someone who takes some getting used to. Later, a woman on the Driftveil Drawbridge mentioned that it's Clay who's in charge of the bridge.

After getting off the bridge, Emile and Cheren met the much-talked Clay, who introduced himself as the Driftveil City Gym Leader, and he enlisted them to help defeat the Team Plasma Grunts who have been causing mayhem in Driftveil.

Episode 26: The Cold Never Slaughtered Me Anyway Edit

After Emile and Cheren defeated the Plasma Grunts hiding in the Cold Storage, Clay came in with some Workers to arrest the Grunts and the detachment's leader, Zinzolin of the Seven Sages. Clay then invites them to challenge his gym, and Emile commentates that he will eventually.

Episode 27: You Always Change Edit

As Emile and Cheren look on, Ghetsis leads a detachment of Plasma Grunts to confront Clay, who had arrested Zinzolin and two Grunts. Clay gives in, and Ghetsis departs with Zinzolin.

Episode 28: Clay Achin' Edit

Emile defeats Clay, using only Ottawa.

Episode 29: Charge N Up Edit

Clay helps Emile by opening the way into the Chargestone Cave. He then gives Emile the TM for Bulldoze.

Episode 39: Twist of Slate Edit

Within Twist Mountain, Emile and Cheren talk to Clay.

  • Clay was first mentioned in the same episode as Lenora's and Burgh's first mentions.
  • Clay is one of Emile's favorite Gym Leaders in the anime.[1]
  • Emile uses a western accent when voicing Clay.
    • Fitting, as Clay is depicted as a western-attired man, a mix between a sheriff and an oil tycoon.
    • Fitting to a combination of his attire, name, and the nickname "The Miner King", Clay specializes in Ground types.
