"Hey, everybody! It's Chuggaaconroy!"
―Emile at the beginning of almost every single Let's Play video he makes

Emiliano Rodolfo "Emile" Rosales-Birou (born April 8, 1990), better known online as Chuggaaconroy or Chugga for short, is an American YouTuber, Let's Player and video essayist who has made online content since 2008. He is known for his high production values, regular update schedule, lighthearted and mostly family-friendly approach to games, his propensity for catchphrases and running gags, his impressive lung capacity, his bad puns, and overblown reactions to things that happen throughout his playthroughs. Regarded as one of the greatest Let's Players of all time, Emile's content focuses on playing games several years after their initial release dates, mainly of titles he's played numerous times before. He reached 1 million subscribers and 760 million views in 2015, and has 1.25 million subscribers and 1.24 billion views as of 2024.

Emile created his YouTube account in 2006, and began his career in 2008 with a Let's Play of EarthBound. Since then, he has made comprehensive walkthrough Let's Plays on various video games, the majority of which were released on Nintendo platforms, including titles from the Mother, Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pikmin, Kirby, Pokémon and Xenoblade Chronicles video game franchises. Emile commentates in an informative manner in his videos with the purpose of guiding viewers to complete the game themselves. Emile's channel grew in popularity as his gameplay videos were often recommended on YouTube's suggestions. After more than two years of making Let's Plays, Emile became a YouTube Partner in 2010, and became Let’s Play creator on YouTube as a full-time job in 2013. In the years since, Emile has made his Let's Plays more professional and informative, and has also done video essays such as Discardables and Chugga Sticks It to Sticker Star. In a departure from his usual Let's Plays and the occasional skit, these videos are done in a style that would be more expected on a video game analysis channel.

Alongside his own Let's Plays, Emile is one of the three founding members of the collaborative Let's Play channel The Runaway Guys, alongside Claire Wheeler (Proton Jon) and Timothy Bishop (NintendoCapriSun), who have produced 47 main collab LPs, along with five side collab LPs and six tournament LPs, and have 480 thousand subscribers and 421 total video views as of 2024. Emile is usually the best or at least better players of whatever game the group is playing, and is the loudest and most energetic of the three main guys. He also tries to annoy Claire as much as possible and allows for situations where the viewers can laugh at the group's collective suffering. In 2012, the group established a video game trivia and challenge show that would go on to become Thrown Controllers, which has grown into a hugely popular show, appearing in the United States and Canada at several conventions. From 2018 to 2024, The Runaway Guys Colosseum was live streamed as a weekend long event to raise money for Direct Relief, which raised over $1,000,000. Emile has also done collaborations with several other Let's Players.

Early life

Emiliano Rodolfo Rosales-Birou was born on April 8, 1990 and is a native of Phoenix, Arizona. He is of French and Mexican descent. He had four siblings that died as miscarriages, and almost died himself at six months due to an allergic reaction. He was mute for the first two years of his life, because he thought he wasn't supposed to talk, and the first time he spoke was in complete sentences. Emile has mentioned that he was poor as a child; his family hasn't been able to afford to take him to the dentist since he was eight.[1][2] When he was nine, Emile didn't brush his teeth for two weeks in an attempt to break a world record. In elementary school, there were rumors that Emile's mother played a Game Boy every day she was pregnant with him, to explain how good he was at video games.[3] His mother was later featured in one of his videos, "My Mom Guesses the Fighters of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate & More", in 2019.

Emile’s father left his family when Emile was young. In his Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Let’s Play, Emile makes he clear his father was emotionally and physically abusive to Emile with him saying that it caused him to fear for his life when he was very young, and when Emile did finally cut him out of his life his father multiple times tried to gaslight and victim blame Emile to think that he was a terrible person for cutting him out of his life, attempts that failed and only made Emile cutting his father out an easier choice and reaffirms that it was the right decision. Emile was a self-admitted terrible student in school until his junior year of high school. He studied statistics in college and planned to also study broadcasting/speaking/narration, and also considered becoming a lawyer had YouTube not worked out. His first job was at Regal Cinemas, where despite being favored by his boss and being Employee of the Month twice, his mother forced him to quit.

Emile has had his own computer with Internet access since 1993. The first video game he played was Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Other games Emile played when he was young included Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Star Wars Episode I: Racer and Banjo-Kazooie. He later became a fan of his favourite video game franchise, the Pokémon series, which got him into RPGs.[4] Emile has also cited Paper Mario as one of the most important games to his childhood, with him also liking its sequel Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.[5] He also became a fan of EarthBound, which was at the time his favourite game but has since been surpassed by Xenoblade Chronicles. Emile had been a member of the EarthBound community fan-site Starmen.Net as a teenager, where he became friends with future collaborator Stephen Georg (StephenPlays/StephenVlog) in 2005. He also befriended musician and future collaborator Jules Conroy (FamilyJules).

Career

Let's Plays

"Hey, everybody! It's Chuggaaconroy! I've been making Let's Plays here for quite a while now, and really appreciate the support from every one of you! If you'd like updates on upcoming projects, what's going on with progress of new videos, or what conventions I'll be at, I recommend following me on either Facebook or Twitter. As a side note, I don't mind answering questions on my Twitter, but keep in mind that I'm not always online. Also remember that I don't give out my friend code or answer questions about future projects."
―Emile's channel description[src]

Emile created his YouTube account on July 26, 2006 under the alias of "Chuggaaconroy". Originating from the chugging sound of a running train, Emile got the name from a random name generator on a Cartoon Planet website; his username was originally "Chugga A. Conroy" before he changed it to "Chuggaaconroy".[6] In 2007, just as the Let's Play format was getting popular, Emile found he really enjoyed watching videos of Ninja Gaiden and Kaizo Mario World by future collaborator Claire Wheeler (Proton Jon), with Emile later citing Claire as his biggest inspiration for making videos. On March 16, 2008, Emile uploaded his first video, a handheld recorded video of a Super Smash Bros. Brawl replay, entitled "Super Smash Bros. Brawl Boss Very Hard Clear".

Emile 2000s

Emile (circa 2000s)

On March 26, 2008, Emile began his first Let's Play; EarthBound. He started out doing exclusively RPGs such as EarthBound, Mother 1, Paper Mario, Mother 3, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, but beginning with Super Mario Sunshine, he started doing other genres as well, such as platformers. Emile's Let's Play series of Super Mario Sunshine became by far the most popular of his Let's Plays and helped boost Emile's popularity, alongside several other Let's Plays he released around this time, including his Let's Plays of Pokémon FireRed and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

Emile profile

Emile in 2013

Emile's channel further grew in popularity as his gameplay videos were often recommended on YouTube's suggestions. Back when video replies were allowed on YouTube, he had a lot of fan interactions then when challenging someone in-video to do certain gameplay content a certain way or better. Many of his earlier videos seem to lack much of his trademark enthusiasm—he's much quieter and speaks in a much less high-pitched, more deadpan voice. In earlier Let's Plays, Emile tended to mash through and talk over story content (dialogue, cutscenes, etc.) while being generally dismissive of what was going on. Emile has cited the 11 minute time limit that YouTube had at the time as the reason for this. During one episode of his Majora's Mask LP, Emile admits that he really doesn't like his Super Mario Sunshine LP all that much, due to having a lot of things in his personal life going wrong at the time including health reasons, and it affecting his mindset while playing through the game. That said, Emile mentioned in a 2024 interview that his feelings about the LP have softened in recent years, he just was disappointed that it was so popular during a time that he was so unhappy.

Emile 2021

Emile in 2021

In 2010, after more than two years at making Let's Plays, Emile became a YouTube Partner, which was unprecedented among Let's Players at the time (multiple others have since become partners), due to the legal "gray area" that showing game footage entails. In July of 2010, Emile was suspended under false copyright claims weeks after fellow Let's Player Timothy Bishop (NintendoCapriSun) also had his account suspended for the same reason.[7] A month later, Emile had his account restored, as did Tim.[8] Let's Plays he released around this time include Pokémon Crystal, Ōkami, Super Luigi Galaxy, Pikmin, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin 2, and Super Paper Mario, while Ōkamiden was the first Let's Play to feature his iconic Cc logo. After he became a YouTube Partner and could upload longer videos, Emile started reading through dialogue completely, and actually makes an effort to give characters in the games good voices.

In 2013, Emile became a Let’s Play creator on YouTube as a full-time job[9], and has continued making Let's Plays including Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Xenoblade Chronicles, Splatoon, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Pikmin 3, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Pokémon Black & White, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Splatoon 2, Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. He has also made two redux Let's Plays, EarthBound in 2018 and Paper Mario in 2023, which contain more background informing than the original Let's Plays. In the years since, Emile has made his Let's Plays more professional and informative. For his channel's tenth anniversary, Emile made a two-hour long video titled "Creating a Let's Play: What You've Taught Me", where he goes over his process for making Let's Plays. Up until 2022, Emile would release short videos reflected on his past year of content for every channel anniversary. In 2024, Emile commemorated his 50th Let's Play milestone, a Let's Play of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, with an announcement video featuring a guitar medley performed by Jules of songs from the games he's Let's Played.

During his Let's Plays, Emile attempts to show every aspect of each individual game he plays to 100% completion, including every item, boss battle, sidequest, and Easter egg possible. He commentates in an informative manner in his videos with the purpose of guiding viewers to complete the game themselves. In spite of their informative nature, Emile's Let's Plays often employ humorous moments in his gameplay, such as the occasional failure or death in a level and subsequent backtracking. His videos have also been described as nostalgic and reflective, as he often tells personal anecdotes of his experiences with the games he plays. Emile has said outright he plays certain games because he personally loves them and wanted more fans to either know about the game, or convince his fans to give the game a second chance to impress them. Most of the time, this has worked, with many people even admitting to playing along with him or deciding to replay it after watching his LPs.

Every game he has Let's Played is available on Nintendo's systems, and with the exceptions of Ōkami, Ōkamiden, Sonic Colors, and Chrono Trigger, they have all been Nintendo first-party titles. He has played at least one game on every major Nintendo home console and handheld, including six on his personal favorite, the Nintendo GameCube. With the exception of EarthBound, Mother 1 and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, most of Emile's Let's Plays from 2008 to 2012 had no episode titles. Starting with Ōkamiden and Pokémon Colosseum, Emile would start giving his episodes titles again, partially as a way to add charm to the videos, and as a way to make more puns. In his fifth anniversary video, Emile reveals that he personally thinks his early Lets Plays suck, mainly because he was so afraid to be himself back then. The fact that he was limited to only ten minute videos at the time forced Emile to rush through games, in stark contrast to the more in-depth playthroughs that attempt to show off everything they had to offer that he's since become known for. The playlist description for his Mother LP explicitly singles it out as his least favorite LP. Emile goes silent for non-dialogue moments in cutscenes with minimal aside commentary, giving the story focus in the game's context. From Episode 2 of Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 onwards, Emile began using a new format for indicating episode numbers, simply putting the number in brackets ((x)) after the proper episode title. This format has also been used on the Runaway Guys channel from Episode 2 of Super Mario Bros. Wonder onwards.

His Let's Plays have inspired several memes, including Steve the Trooper and the 98 Blue Pikmin freakout from his Pikmin LP, the Shiny Koffing freakout from his Pokèmon Crystal LP, the Waterwraith freakout from his Pikmin 2 LP, Bowser's Arms from his Super Paper Mario LP, the Hiker Dance from his Pokémon Black & White LP, his excitement over Chuck Quizmo from his redux Paper Mario LP, and the Backpacker Dance from his Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 LP. His Let's Plays also contain several recurring gags, including the Epic No.

Video Essays

"Paper Mario: Sticker Star was the most disappointing thing since online smash brothers. It's downright impressive how this game understands nothing about why people like RPGs and how much it botches being a follow-up to Super Paper Mario, and the worst thing is that this game ushered in a new era of mediocrity that denies the old Paper Mario from continuing. That's what stings so bad years later, this new Paper Mario refuses to go home. It's not just one substandard game, it's an influential bad game that won't stop infecting other better games that had potential. Even if the newer ones are better, they're still held back by terrible decisions that have stuck around for God knows why. And with Mario and Luigi seemingly dead, one of my favorite series of all time is just kind of to sat on while the publisher keeps pretending this is what Paper Mario is. This is going to be kind of long, a multiple parter for sure."

Emile working on a script

Besides Let's Plays, Emile has made several video essays, including Discardables and Chugga Sticks It to Sticker Star. In a departure from his usual Let's Plays and the occasional skit, these videos are done in a style that would be more expected on a video game analysis channel.

The inspiration for Discardables came from one of Emile's hobbies besides making videos; collecting Pokémon trading cards. Having begun collecting since 1998, Emile has built up quite an impressive collection of them, having over 400 cards. He stores his cards in custom binders designed by Stephen, with a gold star on the spine meaning one of every card, and diamond stars meaning every version of every card. In July 2020, Emile asked if his fans would be interested in occasional videos about card collecting tips or his stories about it, and got a lot of requests to do it. This resulted in the Discardables series.[10] Emile released the first two videos in 2020, a third in 2022, and a fourth in 2024.

The inspiration for Chugga Sticks It to Sticker Star came from Emile's well-documented history with Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Like many other critics, Emile found the game disappointing due to its frustrating game design and toned down story, gameplay, and characters. As he was a fan of the first three Paper Mario games and wanted to like this one as well, Emile chose to 100% it, adding to his frustration further. A breakdown of the game mixed with his usual brand of humor, the Chugga Sticks It to Sticker Star series deconstruct and dissect all of the problems that plagued his experience, as well as expanding on his complicated feelings towards the shreds of genuinely good moments that evoke what Paper Mario had been in the past, and his extreme frustration at the numerous deeply flawed design choices that could have been avoided or mitigated. The series started in November 2022 amid his redux LP of Paper Mario, and concluded in November 2023. He also released a separate video containing the entire series in December 2023.

In late July and early August 2024, Emile made a series of video essays which he uploaded daily, including the videos "The Ridiculous Quest for Figurines in Wind Waker", "How Gen III Roaming Legendaries Destroyed My Childhood", "Every Side Game in Kirby's Epic Yarn", "Sonic Colors DS is Different, but GOOD!" and "Pokémon Moves You've (Probably) Never Heard Of!". These videos also served as bonus videos for Let's Plays that previously did not have them. On August 6th 2024, Emile announced that after having released these series of bonus videos, he confirmed that two further bonus videos, Kirby Fighters & Battle Frontier, will happen but he was unsure of when. He also revealed that there were reasons he couldn’t do them at the time, which he said he'd explain later.[11][12][13]

YouTube Shorts

Emile began to produce YouTube Shorts on his main channel in November 2024, all of which have been edited by MonkeyNess. They consist of short clips from memorable moments of Emile's Let's Plays. Notable shorts include MARIO RPGS AREN'T F-ING S*** ANY MORE, Groudon in a Nest Ball, SHINY KOFFING, The Hiker Dance, The Waterwraith and Leaving Behind Pikmin.

The Runaway Guys

"When making a brand new collaborative Let's Play channel, a lot of things need to be done. First of all, you've got to be sure you pick a first game that's sure to bring out the frustration in everybody! The next thing is to make sure that your recording equipment can take the loudness associated with such frustration! Next, you have to think of a clever name for the whole channel."

The Runaway Guys

Emile and Claire had spoken a lot about collaborating on a project where they could meet up and play games together. They had been great friends for quite awhile, in fact Emile was inspired by Claire to pursue a YouTube career. At Magfest 9, they began to record games with who was at the time a guest, Tim. They had the dynamic of playing together in the same room instead of what was done at the time which was post commentary or video calls. The first game they played for the channel was Mario Party 1 for N64. Overtime, Tim became a permanent member to the group. Their next LP was New Super Mario Bros Wii (filmed at PAX East), where they brought on their actual first guest, fellow Let's Player Josh Jepson. This became a running trend where in some Let's Plays, player 4 would be guest YouTubers such as Masae, Lucahjin, SuperJeenius, StephenPlays and Tom Fawkes.

The channel had a variety of ideas for names. The prototype name for the channel was Kaizo, as to hide the idea of the channel in public as it shared the same name as Claire's, at the time, recent playthrough. The team struggled to come up with a name with one infamous name being a joke name, 'PressL2P'. However, in the end, TheRunawayGuys stuck and the channel was created on 2 December 2010. From the beginning, the group filmed in hotels near the Convention venue, as at the time it was the only convenient time for everyone to meet up to record, however after 2016, the group decided to record at Emile's house where they would marathon one or two games over a three-day period to pad out an entire year's worth of content. They meet up together 2 to 3 times a year. With multiplayer games, the three core members playing the video game, featuring their commentary, experience with (and opinions of) the chosen game, as well as related and unrelated discussions. Sometimes they'll bring on another youtuber as a 4th member/guest. With single player games, 1 member with barely any experience with the game and play through it to the end with the other two co-commentating and giving pointers. The channel uploads every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday until the LP is done. Once the LP is done, they'll play the a 'Side Collab' until the next LP is finished editing. Along with their official long-running LPs, they have done one-shot filler LPs (labeled "The Runaway Gaiden"), tournaments featuring multitudes of guest players, and side collab projects that they gradually update and use as filler between regular projects.

On occasion at various conventions, the Runaway Guys have their own panel, called Thrown Controllers, a live game show which focuses on video game trivia and challenges. The event has been broadcast on numerous gaming conventions such as PAX, Magfest and Momocon. In its debut at PAX East 2012, two teams took turns answering questions and playing video game challenges, either against each other, solo, or against members of the audience. At PAX Prime 2012, they retooled the game into a single-person quiz show with challenges, similar to the initial concept except for one person at a time, and this is how it has been done since. Many prizes are awarded at these panels, ranging from character pins from Fangamer to (as a grand prize) an actual video game console, such as a Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, or Nintendo Switch. At conventions, the group have also held Q&As where fans can come up and ask questions to The Runaway Guys. This became a trend at Momocon 2015 and has continued through most of their panels.

In 2018, Claire was approached by charity organisation Direct Relief if the The Runaway Guys would like to do a charity marathon similar to Zeldathon, a Zelda games marathon. Claire agreed and they teamed up to create a 3-day charity marathon event called The Runaway Guys Colosseum, which ran from 2018 to 2024. This event benefitted and was in partnership with Direct Relief Gaming, under their Direct Relief Colosseum event series. Direct Relief is a humanitarian charity giving medical support to people around the world regardless of politics, religion, or ability to pay. Since the channel is known best for Mario Party, their inaugural and signature collab game series, the theming of the event was centered around the Mario Party series. This didn’t end with a Mario Party segment being thrown in almost every year, it even went down to the donation sounds originating from games across the Mario Bros. and Mario Party series. All 12+ hours of air time between the three days were jam packed with entertainment. The events and games played varied each year included incentives for the audience to donate toward. These incentives could be as simple as impeding the players' progress of current games, to bonus streams such as the aftermath of the Chaos Cookie (playing the top 10 or so games donated by the end of the segment). In 2025, it was announced by SuperMCGamer, the event coordinator, that the entire event would be retired. Scheduling issues with the various cast members (due to personal lives & projects) left them with less people available than expected, and they didn't want to bring in a bunch of new faces to make up for it and thus risk straying away from what the event was meant to be. So they opted to retire it on a high note instead. Future event plans with the group have not been announced at this time.

The first of the main three Runaway Guys, Emile is usually the best or at least better players of whatever game the group is playing. He is the loudest and most energetic of the three main guys. He also tries to annoy Claire as much as possible and allows for situations where the viewers can laugh at the group's collective suffering. In the Mario Parties (up to Mario Party 4), he played Donkey Kong. In Mario Party 5, he switched to Daisy. In Mario Party 7, he switched again to Toad. In Super Smash Bros, he played Ness. In Mario Kart 64, he played Wario. In the New Super Mario Bros. series, he played Mario, but switched to Yellow Toad in New Super Luigi U. In Kirby's Return to Dreamland, he played Kirby. In Fortune Street, he played Bowser Jr. for the first three boards, then switched back to Donkey Kong starting from Slimenia. In the Tournament Arc of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, he played Lucas. In Mario Power Tennis, he played Bowser Jr. In Mario Kart: Double Dash, he played Toad on Team Streetpassers with Masae. In the Rayman series, he played Rayman. In Castle Crashers, he played Red Knight. In The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, he played Red Link. In Secret of Mana he played the Boy. In 100% Orange Juice!, initially he played as QP, but later switched to Sumika.

Collaborations and Guest Appearances

Emile has collaborated with several other YouTubers. He has also made several guest appearances, most notably by making regular appearances on Stephen Georg's vlog channel. Emile was also well known for his work with TheSpeedGamers, and appeared live at their home base for two separate marathons.

While he worked with TheSpeedGamers, Emile did speed-runs of games, such as EarthBound and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door for marathons. He helped commentate a few times, and also had an account on the TheSpeedGamers forums. He appeared on-camera during the Winter 2009 Pokémon Marathon, wearing a silver mask concealing his face. He helped out in the Mother/EarthBound marathon with TheSpeedGamers, by doing a speed run of EarthBound, and attempting to break the world record. Due to unfortunate circumstances, he did not accomplish his goal. He attended the Mario Marathon on June 11, 2010 for TheSpeedGamers, to raise money for ACT Today, where he took off his mask and showed his face to the public for the first time.

Some time after revealing that he is a fan of the game commentary group BrainScratch Commentaries, Emile met up with the quartet of un-professional commentators to do matches of Super Smash Bros. Brawl and co-commentating Super Mario Galaxy. Some even guest starred on his own projects, with SomeCallMeJohnny joining him for the ScareScraper, and Ted being part of the scrapped Melee tournament on The Runaway Guys.

From 2010 to 2022, Emile made regular appearances on Stephen's channel, and they appeared in each other's videos regularly. Emile helped to push viewers to StephenVlog by featuring Stephen on his channel (for Pikmin 2 Challenge Mode) and appearing in the vlogs, and was notorious for always intentionally ending the vlog incorrectly. He also made several appearances on StephenPlays, such as the Mario Party Boards and Mario Party series, You're In The Movies, the Splatoon First20, and in the last episode of Pokémon LeafGreen. He also gave them a multitude of gifts, including a 3DS, an Xbox One, a Wii U, two Nintendo Switches, and one of the rarest GameCube games. On the other hand, Stephen and Mallory helped Emile by designing his iconic Cc logo and made a new one for each LP starting with his Ōkamiden Let's Play in 2012, and continued to make graphics for his Let's Play videos until 2022. Starting from 2013 and continuing until 2020, Stephen and Mal continued to visit Emile every year in either December or January to spend time with each other and exchange presents. As of July 2024, the friendship status of Stephen and Mallory with Emile since his controversy is unknown. As a result, it is also unknown wether they will ever collab again.

From 2014 to 2021, Emile did several collaborations with Masae, on both their channels and also on The Runaway Guys and Stephen's vlogs. The Let's Plays they collaborated on include Pikmin 3, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Fortune Street, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Party 2, Mario Party 4, Splatoon, Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome Amiibo, Pokémon Black & White, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Splatoon 2. From Pokémon Emerald to Pokémon Black & White, Masae created artwork for Emile's Pokémon Let's Plays, typically for his bios of Legendary Pokémon. During a pause in uploading content on their accounts, Emile and Masae played Mario Party 2 together. The playthroughs of Pirate Land, Horror Land, Mystery Land, and Bowser Land were uploaded to Emile's account while Space Land and Western Land went to Masae's. Originally Emile and Masae were going to play Mario Party 3 on her channel to follow up their collab of playing Mario Party 2 between their two channels. They skipped to Mario Party 4 on account of technical difficulties. While the duo did return to Mario Party 3 later, they only managed to play the one of the six boards before their breakup.

NCS & Chugga Watching Nintendo Direct August 2024

Tim and Emile watching the August 2024 Nintendo Direct

Since 2022, Emile and Tim have done reactions to Nintendo Directs which are uploaded to Tim's channel. These videos contain their reactions to several game announcements including Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Pikmin 4, Super Mario Wonder, the Super Mario RPG remaster and the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remaster. Of these, the reaction to The Thousand-Year Door remaster is perhaps the most notable due to Emile's overjoyed reaction at Mario RPGs not being "fucking shit anymore", referring to his dislike of the modern Paper Mario games (Paper Mario: Sticker Star in particular). Emile uploaded this reaction to his own channel under the title "The Thousand-Year Door Reaction". In August 2024, Emile appeared as a guest for one of Tim's EarthBound Twitch streams, having previously appeared sporadically in various streams.

In July 2022, Emile joined fellow Pokémon streamers Partyarlie, Ajentvee and Bryand as contestants on The4thGenGamer's Speedrun Survivor series. He was coached by PulseEffect and they ultimately won the challenge. Their complete run was not shown in the Speedrun Survivor series itself, as The4thGenGamer announced after the seventh episode that the series in its intended form would be cancelled, but later released a condensed version of the series in one video, which revealed that Emile and PulseEffect won the challenge. Like the other contestants and coachers, Emile was interviewed throughout the series on several occasions; his complete interviews were later released on The4thGenGamer's Patreon account. PulseEffect later released a video of his and Emile's run.

Emile collaborated with Marriland on the now unlisted series Chugga & Marriland In DisastORAS!!. He collaborated with Tama Hero on several projects on both their channels. In 2008, Emile co-hosted the weekly podcast Warp Zone with AntDude (formerly known as Sonikdude) as they discussed Nintendo related topics, releases and fan questions. Emile collaborated with several other YouTubers and Let's Players in his Pikmin 3 Mission Mode series, including Stephen, Claire, Tim, Lucahjin, ProJared, The Completionist, Yoshiller and Masae. He aimed to do each of Pikmin 3's Mission Mode stages with different guests. About halfway through, Emile started running into trouble with meeting up with everyone (and, on one occasion, was missing a piece of equipment he needed for recording), leading to long delays between episodes and some repeated guests. Following a two-year hiatus, Emile dropped the idea and simply wrapped up the rest of Mission Mode with Masae in December 2019.

In September 2022, Emile appeared in the Nintendo of America video "What We LOVE about Xenoblade Chronicles 3 – Why I Play", in which he discusses his personal experience with Xenoblade Chronicles 3. In October 2023, Emile guest starred on the podcast Razzle Dazzle to discuss Xenoblade Chronicles. In December 2023, Emile and Tim guest starred on the podcast Nintendo Switch Online Game Club by Good Vibes Gaming, appearing in the episode "Target Earth".

Emile has mentioned in videos that he struggled with family and financial issues during his childhood, as well as with autism. For a short period of time, he believed he was misdiagnosed, writing in 2011: "Found out this week that I was never autistic and was put in special ed and on medication as a kid for no reason because the school thought my "different" behavior was a mental disability and not being gifted, which is what I really am. Oh, educational system, how you fail us time and time again. Always thought it was odd being told "you're disabled and need help" when I could do everyday things just fine. Then again, I never used it as a crutch for sympathy, so I guess nothing's changed."[14] However, in his EarthBound redux Let's Play, In Episode 55, Emile finally reveals that he is autistic, explaining he only took things back because a relative convinced him that he wasn't, and explains some things about how his mind works, right down to the way in which he visualizes his thoughts rather than remembering mental text blurbs the way that neurotypical people do.[15][16]

In his first few years, Emile never showed his face, except for one video he posted about wanting to see EarthBound on Virtual Console, when he was uploading his first playthrough of EarthBound, although he took it down shortly after and kept his face a mystery for newer subscribers. But he eventually subverted this after his appearance on TheSpeedGamers. Nowadays, while he still acts shy while on camera, he's no longer afraid to show his face. In his day-to-day life, Emile tends to follow a pretty straightforward and rigid schedule. He goes to the gym on a frequent basis to psyche himself up for recording and even hired a personal trainer, he neatly organizes his video game and merchandise collections, and he tends to frequent the same restaurants over and over again (notably Applebee's and Buffalo Wild Wings). Emile does spice things up with his eccentric personality, but as stated in his Animal Crossing: New Leaf LP on his birthday, this routine makes him feel happy and accomplished. As of 2019, Emile resides in Atlanta, Georgia. He lived in a rented apartment for years before he owned his first house in 2015.

Aside from YouTube, Emile is active on Facebook, Bluesky and Twitter. He has more than 108k Facebook fans, more than 258k Twitter followers and 18k Bluesky followers. On Bluesky and Twitter, he regularly talks about video games and interacts with his followers. From November 2024 onwards, two years after Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter, Emile has stopped promoting his Twitter account in favour of BlueSky, stating that due to the "violent videos, disturbing content and hate speech", Emile stopped feeling comfortable promoting Twitter to his audience as a nice place to follow him, stating that "no kid should have to see that stuff."[17] After many asking him over the years, Emile decided to open a PO Box in November 2024.[18]

In October 2024, Emile went on hiatus after the death of his grandfather, and spent time with his family and took care of anything difficult for them.[19] He returned the following week and thanked his audience for all the well wishes about his grandfather, which his extended family saw and appreciated.[20] Emile had known this was coming for a while, and thought the last 5 times he saw him could've been the last time, so he considers himself lucky to have seen him so many extra times. He was a great-grandfather of two, one of which is 11 years old, so he made it really far.[21] Emile revealed it was a packed week for his family as they found out his grandparents had bedbugs the day after he passed, so they had to move his grandmother, her dog, and guests to other houses while also dealing with all the work that comes with someone dying, so Emile was glad he was there for support.[22]

In March 2025, Emile revealed he wouldn't be making Splatoon 3 videos, stating "It's not often I make posts about what I'm NOT making, but I think it's warranted this time. My heart isn't really into making Splatoon 3 videos and I don't think I will. Don't get me wrong when I say this. Hearing from people who got into Splatoon because of my videos and now play in tournaments is one of the highest compliments I've ever received. I'm super proud of the work everyone did to make those videos come to life, and I like some things about 3 better than 2 such as Salmon Run and Alterna. But there's a lot of things I also don't like as much and I didn't stick with the game beyond its first year. It was also rough working for years to make guides for every weapon, having updates constantly invalidate my work because they kept breaking their "final update" promise, and going through that only for a new game to come out right when I'd get it done, immediately dating all my work. I realized I could make five other projects if I just didn't do Splatoon stuff, my time isn't unlimited, and I think I'd rather make more individual projects than one Splatoon project. That isn't to say I won't ever make Splatoon videos again. Maybe I'll go wild for Splatoon 4 and have that passion again, but I don't think I want to continue in the style I did for 1 and 2."[23][24] Emile later clarified on BlueSky that new videos are still coming but he's just unsure if he want to make Splatoon videos for now.[25]

In April 2025, Emile revealed that due to breaking a molar a week prior, his ability to make videos has been effected and is at a point where he doesn't know if he can consistently release more videos that week. He also revealed he would be going in for dental surgery on Tuesday, and would share an update when he has it.[26] Emile revealed in his update that his dental procedure is done and was worse than his dentists thought, he had a cavity open under a filling and his tooth rotted from the inside out, so all his brushing and flossing didn’t help. Although Emile's tooth is fine for now, his dentists advised replacing it with a false tooth soon, and stated that videos will return when they can.[27]

Relationships

Due to an especially traumatic time when he was assaulted as a child, Emile was left unable to enjoy sex until well into his adult life. He struggled with comprehending anything sexual, which hindered his attempts at relationships. Even with people he was comfortable dating, Emile struggled with concepts like them seeing him naked or enjoying sex for years after that. On an EarthBound-centric podcast, Emile told the story about his first girlfriend, back in high school. She was a huge EarthBound fan, but she wasn't the nicest person, and the relationship turned sour. Emile's best friend at the time decided to try to find out what was going on, and he found out the only reason she was dating Emile was to impress fellow EarthBound fan and future Undertale and Deltarune creator Toby Fox.

Emile and Masae dated for 10 years, but following several strains to their relationship up to 2021, they went their separate ways due to conflict of interests with keeping their relationship discreet and social pressure from the community fanbase adding additional strain to their publicized dynamic, collectively agreeing to no longer associate or collaborate with each other for both personal and professional matters. Losing her was the hardest thing Emile has ever gone through and he regretted how emotional he got about it and the way he handled it.[28] The both of them made an agreement to quietly and gradually disassociate from each other's content.[29][30][31][32][33] They later publicly made peace with each other and resumed their agreement to disassociate from each other.[34][35]

Emile later began dating his current girlfriend, who he announced he was dating in an episode of his Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 Let's Play, stating that he had been playing the game with her off-screen.[36] Emile has refused to disclose any personal information about online. Emile mentioned in his Xenoblade Chronicles: Future Connected Let's Play that his girlfriend originally was from Scotland. They continued their relationship long-distance until she moved in with Emile and Tim in December 2024. Emile works hard every day to make sure their future together can be a happy, comfortable life.[37] Emile mentioned in January 2025 that he told his girlfriend about his 2025 video plans, which she said was a “ top tier line up.” Emile then revealed that his girlfriend is "pretty qualified to tell you that" because she’s watched him since his first year of videos in 2008, and there is a few different long-awaited things in there she was looking forward to seeing.[38]

2010 YouTube suspension

Tim with Emile

Emile and Tim both had their accounts briefly suspended in 2010

In July 2010, Emile and Tim were suspended under false copyright claims, though both their accounts were later restored weeks later.[39] The temporary suspension led to Emile's channel getting further attention after it was reported on multiple websites including Zelda Universe and Bulbapedia, ironically doing him more good than harm in the end. The person or group of people went around YouTube reporting videos for false copyright violations under false names (like Timothy Bishop, the real name of NintendoCapriSun), sometimes affiliated themselves with large companies like Nintendo. For instance, one of Emile’s videos was taken down by a user who claimed to own the copyrights to the Pokémon franchise, while another was taken down by a user who claimed ownership over Emile’s voice.

Prior to Emile's suspension, YouTube partner support was contacted constantly in order to prevent Emile from getting suspended and to notify them about the vandals submitting the false claims. For a while, it looked like Emile might not get suspended, but the vandals redirected all of their efforts at him to finally get him suspended on July 16th. The videos that Emile received falsely copyright claims were three episodes of his Pokémon Crystal LP and one episode of his Super Mario Sunshine LP. [40] Both Emile and Tim's suspensions were reported on multiple websites including Zelda Universe and Bulbapedia, with Emile sharing these reports to spread word of the controversy.[41]

On July 19th 2010, Emile revealed that the vast majority of his videos still worked elsewhere, but that this might not be the case for too much longer.[42] Emile responded by submitting counter-claims to the vandals that took down his account with false claims, by doing this, he was able to negate the effects of their claims. On July 31st 2010, Emile had his account unbanned from YouTube and thanked his fans for being patient throughout the controversy, saying "Gotta say, I want to thank each and every one of you who was patient throughout this whole thing. I would've never had such a strong drive to come back without you, even if I like making videos so much."[43][44]

Following his account being restored, Emile began receiving questions asking why Tim also didn't get his account restored; Emile responded by saying "I can personally assure you: He'll be back soon."[45] On August 3rd 2010, Emile revealed that Tim had been unbanned from YouTube.[46] Despite having his account restored, Emile had his videos removed for no apparent reason, saying "Filling in everyone who's just waking up because I'm getting mail about it faster than I can reply: I did NOT delete my videos or set them to private. YouTube removed all my videos for no apparent reason, they all say "Video Rejected (Account Suspended)" on the My Videos page. They possibly think I'm suspended and should lose all my videos when I'm really not suspended."[47][48][49] On August 4th 2010, Emile revealed that his videos were now back online.[50] He clarified that this wasn't the result of any new flagging or DMCA claim, saying "Guys, this isn't the result of any new flagging or DMCA claim. I have 0 Emails telling me that a video of mine was taken down or even has a claim on it. This was YouTube's doing, has nothing to do with a flag or a DMCA claim."[51][52]

2021 EarthBound video takedowns

In June 2021, five episodes of the EarthBound redux Let's Play made by Emile got blocked by the Japanese division of Sony Music because of the game's soundtrack, which they own the distribution rights to.[53][54][55][56] Emile lost his redux EarthBound Let's Plays’ ad revenue and five of his videos from the redux LP, including the 31st episode, were removed.[57][58] Emile was among several YouTubers effected by this, who said that their EarthBound-based videos were being flagged for copyright by Sony. In some cases, it was reported that Sony claimed the ad revenue for the video in question; in others, the videos appeared to have been removed entirely.

Emile had filed requests to get the videos restored, and they were restored a week later on July 3rd 2021 after The Completionist helped Emile get in touch with some people who could deal with the problem.[59] He made a tweet later that day in which he said "The entirety of the EarthBound Remake has been restored! Thanks to Completionist for getting me in touch with some people who could deal with this problem! All it took was getting somebody to actually read my emails to see these claims were fraudulent. Bonus: To the contrarians who were all "UM, ACTUALLY. You don't understand the music industry and Sony is within their full legal right to claim your videos of a game they didn't make!" Yeah, no. There's a difference between being granted a license and owning something."[60]

However, the following week on 17 July 2021, the 5th episode of the redux EarthBound LP was taken down, which Emile tweeted about, saying "Revenge of the Sony! I guess they aren’t done claiming they made EarthBound yet."[61] The Completionist helped Emile resolve the controversy, and the video was later restored.[62]

Other copyright issues

Emile was originally planning on covering the Celebi event during his LP of Pokémon Crystal. However, Emile eventually learned that the artist he hired to make the drawings for the Legendary Pokémon in the series was actually engaging in art theft. This led to Emile scrapping the idea for the video entirely, as he couldn't verify if the art made for Celebi was also plagiarized and didn't want to risk anything.

Nintendo had initially targeted and content ID-claimed several of Emile's videos due to them containing footage of their games, causing his ad revenue to temporarily decrease, but later ceased doing so. A vague legal issue he was not permitted to disclose prevented the Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga LP from being released on time, forcing it to take over a month past its scheduled release.

Episode 39 of his Chrono Trigger LP ended up being delayed due to a legal squabble with an unnamed rapper who sampled the Black Omen theme in a song and consequently got Emile's video auto-claimed. The delay was spent arguing against the claim, as the rapper obviously had no legal ownership of the Chrono Trigger song, meaning that it didn't make sense for him to gain revenue from the video. Emile's video was eventually put up on August 1, 2019, with the claim having since been cleared up. Previously it was thought that Wiz Khalifa was the one who got the video claimed, as he had notoriously sampled Schala's theme for his single "Never Been". However, this supposition was debunked after Emile revealed the actual song that got him in trouble.

Alleged sexual harassment and grooming controversy

Chuggaaconroy 2024

Emile in 2024

On January 16th, 2024, Emile was accused by video essayist Lady Emily of trying to initiate foot fetish roleplay with her the previous year.[63] Emily posted screenshots of the interactions between herself and Emile over the course of the day, which showed Emile roleplaying scenarios involving taking off her shoes, while also providing context that he's interested in shoes and likes talking about them with people but that it isn't sexual with friends.[64] Emily posted more screenshots of her DMs with Emile in chronological order on January 20th, and hinted at not being the only woman Emile has had these conversations with.[65] Emile issued an apology to Emily on January 17th, and made a longer apology several days later on January 22nd, where he admitted to having similar conversations with other people, remaining friends with some and falling out of contact with others, and apologized to them as well.[66][67]

The sudden alarm of Emile being casted in a negative light caused many of Emile's followers to seek out Masae's opinions and comments regarding Emile's activity, unaware at the time of their past relationship and that doing this put Masae back in a compromised position of having to engage in discussions about someone she no longer wanted to be associated with. The amount of unsolicited questioning resulted on January 24th with Masae releasing a statement formally asserting her disassociation with Emile, disapproving of his actions, and stating she was tired with people still assuming the both of them as friends.[68] On January 25th, 2024, a former fan of Emile nicknamed Lawly revealed that she has known him since late 2009 and they started speaking as friends in early 2010, when she was 15 and Emile was 19, which continued until late 2022. Lawly released a Google Doc showing the full chatlog from AIM and screenshots of their Discord DMs, which show sexually-charged roleplay between the two involving the removal of shoes.[69] The AIM logs Lawly shared date from between January 2010 to August of the same year, and the Discord screenshots shared range from May 2021 to November 2022.[70]

The resulting backlash from these events caused Emile to suffer from extreme public backlash and caused him to lose more than 30,000 of his subscribers over the course of a week. Emile asked that his fellow YouTubers dissociate themselves from him to protect their reputations until he was able to fight back. On February 2nd 2024, the Runaway Guys channel had gone under hiatus due to the controversies surrounding Emile making it nigh-impossible to move forward with him involved in any capacity; however, Thrown Controllers and The Runaway Guys Colosseum were confirmed to continue under different branding. Later in March, that year's Colosseum was confirmed to be happening in May, rebranded as Thrown Controllers Colosseum.[71][72]

Emile's Response

On April 16th, 2024, Emile posted his response to the allegations via a thread on Twitter, also posting a link to a Google Doc titled "Hey, Everybody" consisting of the same information.[73][74] In the statement, Emile looked to "clear up speculation" surrounding the allegations and urged people not to bother anybody whom he talked about. In regards to Masae, he publicly revealed their previous relationship for the first time, writing that losing her was the hardest thing he's ever gone through and that he regretted how emotional he got about it and the way he handled it.

In the next section of the statement, Emile discussed his DMs with Emily. He said that in 2023 Emily reached out to him and let her know how their conversations made her feel and he apologized to her. He said she would never go public with the information, "immediately" got professional help and started seeing a therapist weekly. Then, she made it all public and "crushed" him.[75] He refuted the idea that he asked her for foot pictures constantly, writing that he asked once if he could see photos of her wearing shoes he bought her, not realizing it would make her uncomfortable.[76] Emile shared further screenshots of their conversations, including one where he said that Emily would "encourage [his] roleplay and jokes about shoes" and consent to and participate in it. He said that he thought he was "being dumb with consenting friends" and that at worst it was "a little embarrassing that my kink was probably one reason I liked the subject". Emile shared further screenshots of their conversations about shoes to show the tone of the conversations that led to the roleplay, writing that he believed this read as "pretty silly" from both ends. He then mentioned has autism and struggles with understanding social cues or people's limits, and said that he was confused when she stopped responding to his messages, which is why he sent her many messages after she stopped responding, writing, "I've learned now that repeated messages like this can be stressful to others."[77]

In the next section of the statement, Emile responded to the leaked DMs that took place when he was 19 and Lawly was 15. He refuted the idea that he was a predator, writing that he was an "idiot teenager who made dirty jokes," and reiterated that he had "no intention of doing anything to this person."[78] Emile said that because the chat was so long ago, he "[doesn't] think something that old should be treated as representative of the person [he is] now.".[79] He said that he grew uncomfortable with where the conversations were going due to her age and he told her this numerous times. He realized he had to stop it as she would constantly initiate "raunchy topics."[80] Emile admitted that some of the humor in the messages was not acceptable by modern standards, but that he "lacked the experience" he gained and believes it showed he had "no romantic or physical interest in them as a teen." He said that he was surprised to find she initiated the roleplay when re-reading the logs.[81] He then shared that it was her goal to "manipulate [him] into having sex with them," sharing two times when it was touched on in conversations.[82][83]

Finally, Emile shared several more statements, covering how he was as a 19-year-old, regarding a trip to the mental ward, how he's been since the allegations and what he plans to do moving forward. In the "Me at 19" section, he recalls childhood trauma in which he was assaulted as a child, leaving him "unable to enjoy sex until well into [his] adult life." He also reiterated that he's never assaulted or threatened anyone.[84] In the "My visit to the mental ward" section, Emile admitted that he developed internal bleeding from stress, resulting in two trips to the emergency room and a prescription for sleeping medication, and admitted to having suicidal thoughts, writing that he was put in a mental ward after calling the suicide prevention hotline. He explained what he learned there and how it helped him move forward.[85] In the next section, "How I've Been," Emile wrote that after getting out of the psych ward, he went to live with his girlfriend and praised her for her help and describes a night when he opened up to her fully and cried about the controversy, describing it as the moment he "forgave [his] past self." He said that after two months he began having suicidal thoughts and decided to move back home, continuing their relationship long-distance. She visited him, but he spent half the time writing his statement and another half in a mental ward.[86] Finally, in the "Moving Forward" section, Emile expressed his love for his friends for trusting him and holding him accountable. He apologized for "all the heartache and worry" he caused his friends and followers. He admitted he still made mistakes and needed psychiatric help for his depression and roleplay behavior and promised it wouldn't happen again. He then listed the things he's done to get help since, including visiting his therapist, doing behavioral health sessions, the five nights in the mental ward, never missing his medication, discontinuing his roleplaying and generally learning more about his mental health struggles.[87]

Emile's response resulted in a significant increase in support for him and his channels, with the subscriber counts of both his own channel and the Runaway Guys channel gradually increasing again. Emile remained on hiatus until July 2024, stating that this was to protect his mental health, before beginning a gradual return and uploading some long-promised backlogged bonus videos, before making a full return in August the same year with a playthrough of the Future Connected Campaign of Xenoblade Chronicles.[88][89][90][91] Although the controversy had since managed to settle and Emile returned to uploading videos on his own channel, the Runaway Guys channel did not properly return to uploading videos until December 2024.

Pets

Emile with Chester and Sunny

Emile with his cats Chester and Sunny

Emile has had several pets, including six cats named Kirby, Teddy, Chester, Sunny, Jak and Loki, and a rabbit named Pippy. Of these pets, Kirby was his longest lived and was around for most of his career, while Chester and Sunny are his current pets and are cared for by him, his girlfriend and Tim.[92][93][94][95] Kirby, Teddy and Pippy appeared regularly in his videos with Chester and Sunny likely to as well, while Jak was mentioned in the "Fifty Facts About Chuggaaconroy-Tag Video" and Loki was mentioned in a tweet Emile made in 2023. He has tended to his pets at precise times.

Emile with his cat Kirby

Kirby was named by Emile's mother. He was 5 years (or roughly 36 cat years) old when Emile started his let's play career, and was part of the Chuggaaconroy youtube family for 14 years (or roughly 72 cat years) since, so his fans knew him as long as Emile. Kirby had a habit of wanting to lay on Emile's lap during recordings. Other contributions from Kirby to recordings included meows and trying to get in front of the screen. He was also discussed by Emile often in recordings, along with Teddy. On September 16th, 2021, Emile announced that Kirby had end stage kidney disease, but that the cat was receiving medication for it. Kirby passed away the morning of July 8th, 2023, at the age of 19 years and 10 months, and Emile and Tim were there when Kirby passed away.[96][97][98] He was eulogized in a statement which announced Emile's channel would be going silent for a few days. This hiatus was prolonged by Emile getting severely ill, resulting in six weeks without videos. Emile later announced that Kirby had appeared in a few unreleased recordings prior to his death. Kirby's final recorded appearance was in Episode 48 of Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, and a tribute to him was featured in Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 Finale.

Teddy was adopted by Emile at some point after Kirby. Both cats would go on to be featured regularly in Emile's LPs, through making visual appearances and being mentioned in commentary. He was mentioned numerous times in multiple Let's Plays. Teddy was mostly found barging in on Emile while recording, sometimes messing with his recording equipment, random wires, and even his gaming system. Emile tells the story in one LP of him accidentally kicking Teddy so hard he hit the wall in his sleep. In early 2016, Teddy passed away, and was eulogized in a Facebook post and later in Episode 67 of Pokémon Platinum.

Emile with Sunny

Emile with Sunny

On February 19th 2025, Emile announced his new animal friends, the cats Chester and Sunny. They’re twins that do everything together. Sunny is a little cat with mittens, while Chester is larger and has white socks. They’re both talkative and loving. Emile expressed hope they will make appearances in videos going forward.[99] Sunny is the smaller twin, but don’t let his kitten face fool you. He’s the smart, independent one and comes up with the schemes. Things have to be on his terms, but he’s the most loving guy when he’s in the mood. He’s also an incredible acrobat, doing backflips to catch toys.[100] Chester is the larger of the twins. He’s considerate and protective of his little brother, always trying to take care of him and clean him. He’s an open book about what he wants, but never disrespects Emile to get it. He has a white stripe on his head, distinguishing him from Sunny.[101]

Pippy was Emile's house rabbit. She was a loving, smart rabbit with a bit of a temper. She was named after the Animal Crossing character of the same name.[102] On the night of October 4th, 2019, Pippy passed away, short of her 5th birthday. Emile paid tribute in a statement later that day.[103] The finale of Super Mario Galaxy 2 was dedicated to her.

I decided to try learning how to do commentary with voice acting using one of my favorite games of all time. Here's hoping it wasn't all in vain!

  • "Okay, so last video: There's something I wanted to address because I was called out on two things by you, the viewers. First thing is entirely my fault. I typed up Beautifly's name as "Beautiful." I make mistakes, I deserved to be called out on it. Thank you for pointing that out. Second though, I really need to address. [Talking very fast] It was when I said that Wurmple evolves at random. I received hundreds upon hundreds of comments trying to educate me that it depends on gender, time of day, or some other not-random factor. I am here to disprove this because it is not dependent on gender but on personality value. Gender is only one of four integers that make up a Pokémon's personality value. This is a 32-bit value between 0 and 4,294,967,295, represented in binary, that was introduced in Generation III, one generation after gender was implemented for Pokémon other than Nidoran. Breaking down how this works, Wurmple's evolution depends on the last two bytes of this integer, only one of which decides the Pokémon's gender. It is determined by taking these numbers combined between the two bytes of memory, dividing them by 10, and seeing if the remainder is more or less than 5. If the remainder is less than 5, you get a Silcoon. If it is equal to or greater than 5, you get a Cascoon. There's many player's guides floating around out there that have this detail wrong, so I can understand why you would think otherwise. But if you're gonna try to correct me, please get your facts straight before you do, otherwise, I CAN AND WILL NERD OUT ON YOU. But, what do I know? I can't even spell "Beautifly" right!" — Chuggaaconroy nerding out on you regarding Wurmple.
  • "I know it can be hard to say how you really feel about things, I know it can be scary and make you feel like you don't belong someplace. I've had plenty of that feeling throughout my life. But the fact is, I see so many people every day, that seem to believe they are powerless. That they won't really make a difference because they're one person. And more than anything else in my life, this was already something that I strongly believed in, but more than anything else in my life, that experience of sharing the news that Teddy had passed away with all of you: If there was anything good that came from losing Teddy... It was seeing just how powerful expression can be. In this amazing world, where everything is interconnected, where you can talk to anyone at anytime, and I think it's such a shame that there are people out there that use this to make other people feel terrible, to hurt other people. It has tremendous power, and ironically, the people that I see hurting other people with this ability, are those who believe they are powerless, are those who believe they won't make a difference. And in a lot of cases, I feel that's why people do it, because they feel like it won't matter and they might as well make themselves noticed somehow. What I'm trying to say is: Don't forget to express what you feel. All of us I'm sure, I know definitely I have, wished at some point or another that they had somebody that would be empowering or who would say something like that to them. And YOU can be that person that you wished you had." — Emile's speech at the end of Episode 67 of his Pokémon Platinum Let's Play, on the power of expression.

Trivia

  • In a Wired interview from 2013, Emile noted that he would likely end his Let's Play career sometime before he turned 30 (April 2020), partially due to wanting to pursue a career as a professional video editor at the time, and also out of worry that his popularity would fade with age.
  • Emile's game collection is ordered alphabetically and by platform.
  • In general, Emile tends to have a low opinion on his Let's Plays of video games that have since been remade, as they now appear outdated in contrast to whatever changes and/or new content the remakes have to offer.
  • Emile is considered to a VIP for the fandoms of several games he plays, including EarthBound, Ōkami, and Xenoblade Chronicles.
  • In March 2023, on the 15th anniversary of Emile's first Let's Play video "EarthBound - Part 1: Meteor" being uploaded, the YouTubeGaming Twitter page posted a tweet referencing the occasion, referring to Emile as a "now let's play legend."[104]
  • Emile voiced the Postman in Zelda Universe's 2020 dub of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D.[105]
  • Emile is a supporter of the LGTBQ+ community. He congratulated the community in a Twitter post when the US Supreme Court made their verdict in 2015 that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples by both the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution. During a TRG Colosseum art block, he said "You were never male, you were always you" when the viewer told Emile the viewer's identity. Responding to the news of Claire coming out as a transgender female, Emile commented on the stream that he figured the truth out because of how long the RosaJon thing lasted compared to other jokes on the channel, also stating "I figured it out years ago, but this is the sort of information I take super seriously. I wouldn’t talk about it with anyone unless they asked me about it, and even then, they had to convince me they actually knew and weren’t just speculating."[106]
  • Emile and Masae have LPed many of the same games, including Super Mario Sunshine, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Super Mario RPG, Pikmin, Paper Mario, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Okami, Yoshi's Wooly World, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
  • Emile is the only member of the TRG team who has not ended any board in the Mario Party series games with zero stars. While Tim and the A.I have done this multiple times, Claire did this once in Mario Party 3. In the original Mario Party, it was Tim (that was on Luigi's Engine Room). In Mario Party 2, Tim did this on two boards (Pirate Land and Western Land) while the A.I did this in the last board (Bowser Land). In Mario Party 3, it was Claire (that was on Spiny Desert). (That is, though the guaranteed "Tim or A.I" one was the board Waluigi's Island. That was the A.I. Chugga won with both the Minigame and Coin Stars.) In Mario Party 4, it was Tim (that was on Shy Guy's Jungle Jam). In Mario Party 5, Tim did this on one board (Future Dream) and the A.I did this on one board (Sweet Dream). In Mario Party 6 and onward (through Mario Party 8 and DS) it was the A.I. In Mario Party 6, it was the A.I (that was on Clockwork Castle). In Mario Party 7, it was the A.I (that was on Neon Heights). And in Mario Party DS, it was the A.I (that was on Wiggler's Garden).
    • This does not include Mario Party 8, as this is the only game in the Mario Party series where no one ended a board with zero stars.
      • However, the third board in said game (King Boo's Haunted Hideaway) was close for it. (That is, close for it being Tim or the A.I ending a board with zero stars.) While the duel (if Chugga won and took Tim's one star) would've given Chugga the win, this board would've been the guaranteed "Tim or A.I" one. And it would've been Tim (just like in Mario Party 4 and 5). So in Mario Party 8, it would have been Tim again.
        • Similarly, the fifth board (Koopa's Tycoon Town) had Chugga have zero normal stars. And if he did not get any bonus stars (to get at least one star), this game would've made an instance where all four players have at least one board altogether with zero stars.
      • In Mario Party 5 and on the board Sweet Dream, as the A.I (who was Boo) won the most minigames at the beginning of the game and got the most coins, he would have gotten both the Minigame and Coin Stars. And he would've gotten those two stars to at least take 2nd or 3rd place. Claire (either way) would have won that board. So that was a guaranteed "Claire win".
    • Altogether --in the Mario Party series games (through Mario Party 8 and DS)-- counting just the games where Tim or the A.I ended a board with zero stars, Tim did this in four games (Mario Party 1, 2, 4, and 5), while the A.I did this in all the rest (Mario Party 3, 6, 7, and DS).
  • Emile usually annoys Claire by saying "Move faster Pokey". Claire normally fires back with comments about a specific Pikmin of Emile's.
    • One of them happened as a prank very early in Dokapon Kingdom (adding insult to injury with Emile being the red guy), followed by a Tim prank that gave Emile's character poo hair.
  • Claire once kicked Emile out of his house, having been playing that episode of the Brawl LP at Claire's house in Canada.
  • Emile usually practices before the TRG games; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Claire usually doesn't practice before the LPs, and his results are just as everywhere as a practiced Emile's.
    • He had some difficulties playing Mario Party 3 that may have been aided by his bad rolling luck, but he has essentially dominated the GameCube Mario Party games with little practice.
      • In fact, Claire's only Mario Party 6 practice before the LP was The Stream, and one hour playing what mini-games a save file he had were unlocked before the LP itself.
